What is the Open Door Appeal ?

The Open Door Appeal is a registered Charity (Reg. No. 1141414) supported by Christ Church, Barnet to raise funds to ‘buy back’ and restore the adjacent building that once served as the original place of worship and school for Christ Church. On completion, the building will provide appropriate facilities for older members of the local community in a welcoming and secure environment. This Christian-led centre will offer practical help, companionship, joy, activities and hope – with an open door to everyone.

Creating a legacy ...from generation to generation

Christ Church is well known in Barnet for being a lively church that provides a wide range of activities and services for both young and old. Christ Church already runs popular events for older people such as lunches, weekly meetings, and an annual, week-long holiday club for those most in need of a break. Each of these activities is operating at full capacity. The need to 'give back' to the older generation is enormous - demand for these types of activities is already far greater than supply. Nearly 9% of those living in and around High Barnet are over the age of 75, and this percentage is set to increase over the next few years. Ownership of the building next door will enable us to do much more for many more.

Getting older doesn't only happen to someone else

If you would like to join us in making a brighter future for us all and ensuring we all have something to look forward to, please donate to the Open Door Appeal.

The challenge

There are three distinct stages to our challenge to raise the funds required.

Stage 1: Raising £400,000.

We have now raised all of this first stage target thanks to the generosity of the Christ Church congregation and many more supporters in the local community and further afield. With these funds we have been able to purchase the building and it officially became ours on 28th March 2012! Our architects have now prepared draft designs for the building's future. The balance of the first-stage target yet to be raised will enable us to undertake crucial maintenance work. This will prevent further deterioration whilst we secure the significant investments necessary for the major repair and development work to begin.

See 'Raising Funds' for ways in which we plan to raise money and to donate securely on-line.

Upon renovation our plan is to use the building
as a venue to provide much needed services for our older community.

Stage 2: Raising a further £1.5 million

Our long term plan is to reconfigure the building in a way that will maximise potential including expanding the use and capacity of the hall without spoiling its beautiful façade and historic style. We plan to add an upper floor within the existing structure,. The work will be carried out in four phases.

Stage 3: Serving and bringing together the community with an open door!

We plan to provide a pioneering centre for our ageing society, with services that bridge divides, particularly between generations. See ‘The Vision’ for more details.
